Plain English for Lawyers

2019/February/11 18:00 - 2019/March/03 18:00

Every piece of writing that leaves your hand is an advertisement for you. Most lawyers are aware of that, yet too often, lawyers write texts that contain more words than anyone needs to read; that contain sentences, if not paragraphs, that are unclear; that use words unfamiliar, if not unknown, to those who will read them; and that will put to sleep those who have no choice but to slog through the paper to its end.

Meanwhile, you can earn consistently good scores by writing plainly, whether you write in Ukrainian or in English. The UBA Students League together with NOBLES is holding 4 workshops on Plain English to help you write clearly and concisely. We will talk about principles of Plain English and how it differs from other writing styles. We will address some myths associated with proper writing and discuss advantages of Plain English and its possible shortcomings. At the end of the course we will hold a writing contest, sponsored by NOBLES, with cash prizes for the winners. Professor Christopher Kelley of the University of Arkansas School of Law will help us with our first workshop and the contest.
Participation in the workshops is free and you can register here.
